Well, I was back out on the water yesterday. The water temps are still cool, but the air temps have gone up substantially here (almost 80 degrees yesterday and I got sunburnt a little). That made the water temps more bearable in a wetsuit. We had free run of the private lake we ski on from 11:00 until after 4:30 and skied every bit of it. The water was rough on the south side courtesy of a NNE wind. But the north side was great and provided all of our skiing opportunities. The weather this week will be in the high 70's to low 80's all week, providing our usual ski days on Tuesday and Thursday. We are skiing as much as possible before I leave for my annual snow ski sabbatical.
Weather so far has not been a major issue this year. We have had some cool days skiing, but the psychos in our group have had little problem furthering their skiing addictions. One of our skiers wives complained about his skiing and his response was classic "at least you know where I am and I am not hanging out in bars!". I can tell you I have yet to put a dry suit on. Only one skier in our group has been using a dry suit. The skiing has been good as long as you are on a lake with a protected north shoreline.
Here in Florida we have two seasons in the ski world. There is our north wind season and our south wind season. During spring, summer and most of fall, our winds normally come off the Gulf from the SSW. Periodically they will switch to the Atlantic with an eastern wind. In the winter, it is N/NE almost constantly. That is why many slalom courses here are on either the N or E shore lines. During the winter the jet skis and most recreational boating comes to a halt and the hard core skiers go to work. Here in Florida, now is the best time to ski. So if you are heading this way to rid yourself of the snowblowers and snow shovels, make it a point to find a pull on one of our many lakes. See you on the water!
