Purchasing a 1998 Ducati Monster 900 later today. This will be my first bike and, while I know it's not exactly a beginner's bike, I'm getting a crazy deal on it from a friend of mine that took meticulous care of it.
I'm excited to get into the hobby, although I'm scared at the same time to have yet another money pit in my life.
Any other Ducati owners on here? Any motorcycle enthusiasts period, what are ya'll riding? What kind of tricks-of-the-trade do you have for me and others, similar to all the little nuances we all share for boating?
Here's the bike:

Got a new helmet and jacket ordered and on the way, the helmet is coming with an interchangeable heated, dual-lens replacement so the helmet will serve as my snowmobile helmet as well. Great deal at denniskirk.
Also plan on taking a course, as soon as one opens up near me.

I never really liked the undertail exhaust that my '08 had, but it was much quieter when riding than the '09 with the side exhaust when you replace them with aftermarket...

Definitely second this if you haven't ridden before. When I rode I always watched those intersections and lane changers every time as if they didn't see me. That way I was ready for it when they came cutting out. It's really not a matter of "if" but "when" so be ready for it when your time comes.

The "not if but when" statement is the one I've been hearing a lot. I like to think I'm an incredibly defensive driver as it is but I know I'll have my eyes opened the first time I get cut off on a motorcycle.
Being around boating and snowmobiling my whole life, and having two pilots as parents has done its fair share of teaching me situational awareness, but I know it's a whole new ballgame when you multiply the idiots you can see on a busy traffic day.

^^^^^yes... assume EVERY car has a 16 year old girl at the wheel texting and doing make-up. :)
Bike I had till about 4 years ago. It started as a new '05 V-Star 1100, and ended like this. Sold it to buy the first boat.
I shall ride again

2011 KTM EXC 450 dual sport bike. 95% offroad and 5% onroad. I feel safer off road and I agree what others are saying about on road driving. I feel unsafe at times in a car let alone on a bike.

Kids getting older and I barely have enough time to fart nowadays. Miss it everyday thou but love the boat and everything about it better so 1 toy it is

Chris, the whole northwest has great dual sport riding. I really like Idaho the best as there is more open areas that you can just jump off road and see where it goes. The attached link is an example of a ride that was done with 1,700 miles and loaded down with concrete and a marker sign. Interesting story.

lewis. how you like the megaphone exhaust? I was going to go that route and saw too many reviews that said it was noisy. I went with a black carbon 2bros shortie with the silencer tip and it's still way loud :)
my bike turned a year old on sunday. bought it as a '09 holdover last year labor day(7kotd with 2 miles on it. I think I scored pretty good). only managed 2800 miles this last year. goal by next labor day is 5k more.

Awesome trip Zabooda! That looks like a great time, reminds me so much of trips I've taken to the UP of Michigan snowmobiling. There's a lot of logging and mining roads to get lost on up there and a lot of history with both of those industry's that has been seemingly left at a standstill since the 1950's. I think the most we've done in a single trip is 1000 miles though, 1700 is ridiculous.

Dusty the most impressive thing I've seen so far in this thread is how clean your garage looks, spill some oil or something man!
I ended up putting about 1500 miles on the Ducati just in September. Considering my commute is only 2 miles, tops, I'm considering that an accomplishment for this late in the year.

I used to race hairscrambles when I lived in Denver. It was probably the worst ass kickings I've ever taken in my life, but they were a ton of fun. Ours were only three hours but there was 250-300 people racing at the same time on a 7.3 mile track.

Just an update here... I'm officially in love. Put something like 2500 miles on since the beginning of September and I'm still riding strong, 27 degrees outside when I left for work this morning.
Been lightly modding so far.. Swapped out all turn signals and taillight, chopped off more of rear frame, tweaked the carbs, new battery, LED package, plasti-dipped belt covers, new sprocket cover, and maybe some other things..
Teaching myself things such as brake/clutch bleeding and carb jetting/tuning instead of wasting money on "Italian" service!

They don't know what number i'm getting yet, I hope it's 22 (not a reed fan) but I probably won't be lucky enough to get one with that low of number. I've always wanted a KTM, and when I finally decided to buy another new one I looked at Honda and KTM and once I saw the Factory Edition I was sold instantly. I think I need to buy a spare set of plastics so I can take these off and not cry when I get the first scratch.

Can't beat a KTM. A lot more money than a Jap bike and 30 pounds less and you'll kick butt on the trails. Remember to check sprocket size that you use, hand guards, Tugger lift straps and skid plate. I modified my 450 EXC before it left the show room floor. Keep up the maintenance.

I would buy a spare set of plastic too. I did this with my last bike; looked new when I sold it. Good luck on getting the number you want.

I sold my FZ6 last year

I bought the FZ1 and love it! Plenty of mods done, and a coule left I'd like to do someday (Ohlins fork, black anodize some parts, etc.)

So here's some dirtbike bikes...
My 09 Husky WR300 (was Glenn Kearney's spare GNCC Race bike w/ only 3 races on it)
16846
The littlest bike, a Suzuki JR50
16847
And the XR50 I just redid for my girls. I bought it new in '01, and it is now on its 3rd set of plastics, 4th or 5th set of graphics, 3rd set of forks. Engine is solid and has never been touched. It has been through the 4 oldest boys and is on to my oldest daughter now (7).

Here's a pic of all the kids on a few of the bikes. Don't worry, the 2 w/o helmets weren't riding at the time, just posing. The daughter in the sparkly hat doens't much like to ride anyways, but the baby does. He'll chase the boys around the yard until they take him for a ride now. lol

Not pictured are the yamaha TT-R90 and the KX100...
Here's a project bike, which is currently stripped down for rebuild. We're hoping to get it going to Cam's first bike this summer, but we'll see. it is a twin-cyl 400cc 2-stroke!

rc, good to see the family involved. I'm seeing less families involved in riding and it may be the cost these days. Bikes for kids are passed down to others all the time at a reasonable price but it's the gear that gets ya.
rc5695
02-08-2013, 02:07 PM
THANKS. we've been able to pass down most of the gear most of the time. Gear (except helmets) is cheap if you know how to shop for it. Shop the outlets and closeouts (not to mention used sometimes) and you can get pants for like $20 shipped! None of use could care less if the style is a couple years old!
Nearly all of us love riding. My wife used to not mind, but since a couple of us have gotten hurt, it kinda tears her up now... She's doing alright with it though. She knows its something we love, and really brings us boys together, and doesn't want to take that away from us. she's a good woman.
FYI: I had my 4th son, Isaiah, riding that JR50 withOUT the training wheels before his 3rd b-day :O We love our dirtbikes ;)

urrrrggh!
We keep the 4 wheelers at the lake and I just don't have time/patience to work on them myself anymore. Mine got tore up w/ ethanol and needs a carb rebuild. I dropped of the girl's 90's, wife's 200 and mine for the rebuild and then just general maintenance such as fluid changes, air filter 2 new batteries, etc and the bill came to a cool $1,000+.

That's insane!!! I spent that on parts last year, but that was a top AND bottom end inthe KX100, top end kits for hte JR50 and RM65, forks for the XR50, and a slew of other little parts. It may take time, but your dollar goes SSOO much further doing your own work! For real, bring them to me next time and I'll charge ya half what the dealer would. We'll both make out! :)

I know, I know. It's the $70/shop hr that kills ya! I simply don't feel like taking weekend time to do it and hauling them all the way home to tinker in my workshop would cost me more in gas towing them home & frustration than what the shop charges.

Well, I figured I could share these! I ordered a new set of wheels for Debbie, my '03 Heritage Softail, back in November and they are finally on the way to Texas! These are the "Cali" by Primo Wheel in California. They are cut from a sold block of billet aluminum then chromed and pc'd so they are one piece tubeless wheels. I can not wait until they get here next week!
He is supposed to be getting me some high res shots they took for advertising, I'll post up when I get them!
Front 21X3.25 & Rear is 16x3.5. They are replacing an already custom set that I have had hell with since day 1.

I had a good time at Bike Week, but a little depressing. I went a few years ago and also about 6 years. There are way less vendors, bikers, and sponsors out there now. While it's still a lot of bikes, it's a lot less than the other times I've been. I enjoyed riding some new bikes from Suzuki, Harley, and Yamaha. It was sad that Triumph, aprilia, KTM, or Ducati decided not to attend. Seems like a lot of audience to ignore in one place.

Took me approximately 8 months to become completely obsessed with bikes. Just rode the Duc to work and it's 32 degrees outside. And I have this in my garage, 1982 Yamaha Virago. Complete teardown and custom build, going to be a street-fighter mixed with cafe kind of build. Front end is from a 2003 R1.

Yeah I've been following that build too. I've been trying to not read too much into how people are doing their builds, I'd rather just learn for myself so I don't end up with a cookie-cutter final product.

Exactly. Sometimes it is nice to see a neat idea and take something away from it though. Hoping to start the build on a 1970's yamaha RD400 for my son soon :)
