Just heard about this stuff in the white tower thread. Please post up your pics, projects, ideas, etc. This is a really neat idea for boat and truck stuff. I'd love some ideas.

I would like to try it out. Is it always flat in color. I actually like the flat look and want to redo my speaker grills to a blue color. I hunk that would look cool.

That is some pretty cool looking stuff. I cant wait to see some people take the strips on there boats and follow them to there tow vechicles to really tie the two together.

I may have to try that on a wakeboard. The satin black paint on one from last summer is chipping off pretty quickly from last season - mostly from riding in the board racks.

They have a gloss finish you can get for it but I'm not sure how easy it will be to remove the plastdip if you put the gloss coat over it. I use the flat or matte black (whatever they call it) on my truck emblems and hella cover lights. It really is cool stuff. I messed up on the rear emblem so I peeled it all off and started over. Very easy to do. Problem I had was when I removed the tape the plasti dip peeled off the emblem because it attached itself to the tape. The fix for that is use a razor blade or toothpick and make sure the plast dip if removed from the tape
Covers were white with black lettering

It really seems that the opportunities are endless. With my boat it is white and black with a solid black trailer. Boatmate sent me a set of brand new black fenders because of issues with the first set and I had planned on painting them white. I considered plastidip although it seems that plastidip's ideal scenario is an area with little traffic/touching(results in early peeling) so the fender idea was thrown out because of how often we use it as a step. Now, the fenders will still get paint but i'm still considering other aspects of the trailer. With all the colors available now i think towers, speaker covers, any emblems is an easy change with plastidip. Im planning on dipping my new vehicles wheels once spring hits.

WHAT???? Only for an SA !!!!
freshturk
01-19-2013, 10:52 AM
I think racks is one of those areas that i would shy away from. There are people all over youtube that plastidip their computers and within weeks have peeling because of the constant manipulation so i feel like any area that gets handled frequently be it with hands, feet, equipment is one of the few scenarios not ideal for plastidip.

I can say with complete Certainty that Drew wont be buying an SA. Not because of price or budget but because the SA really sucks as a surf boat.
I surfed it and you have to have all the hard ballast filled, plus bags, plus 6+ people in the boat to even start to get an LSV quality wave. The SA is a pure unadulterated Wake Boat Hull.
Like many boats out there, you can make it surf but honestly the wave was just tall and and very short. Even with a lot of Nose weight it wouldnt lengthen the pocket.
I was really really hopping it would be a good surf boat as i have loved the boat since i first saw it. I love the line, the looks, everything about the boat except the Surf wave.

Do you guys think it would be a good idea to use the plasti-dip on the moomba letters? Dont you think the water would eventually just end up pealing it off. I would think that the constant water flowing over the letters would just mess it up after a few days on the lake.
I would love to buy those letters for my 07 LSV but they want 500 bucks for them, right now I have nothing on the boat but I think that the letters look awesome. I have heard people talking about the letters coming unglued so I didn't want to spend 500 on letters that are just going to fall off in the water.
If anyone has letters they want to sell me I will buy them off of you BTW.

The plasti dip is a 2 part process in curing.
The first couple hours after you apply it you can easily peal it off to get the edges clean and undo mistakes and such.
You then have to let it cure for 1-3 days according to there videos. After the curing you can remove it still but its much much harder.
They show a 1800 PSI pressure washer spraying on the edges and directly on it to simulate how strong the bond it.
They also say its still removable but you have to really rub at the corners to start an edge.
I think if you have the Moomba letters already and want them as different colors this is a strong possiblity.
If i would have had the Letters on Fierah then i would have blacked them out with this to try it out for everyone. I had the tribal pattern and after a bad day at the docks from A holes wake boarding threw the no wake zone the got dock rash and had to go.

Chad, my boat came with the chrome letters. Early last year I noticed they started peeling off so my boat was still under warranty so they were replaced. Since then I have had no problems out of them. From what I was told its not all the letters that have the problem. There was just a batch of bad ones from the supplier that were put on at the factory. They are a nice add but for how much they cost if they start peeling again they won't be replaced.
I may try the plasti-dip on them. I dont think the water would be an issue. The only thing I'm weary of is after you get it on and if you decide you want to take it off later after its cured you will need a bit of pressure to take it off. I wouldn't want it to weaken or pull the letters off during the process.
I think it will look pretty good but it also looks good chrome, heh decisions decisions...

E4Nash i understand your concerns.
Have your thought about 3m tape? You can buy it in larger sections and cut it to fit the Moomba Letters.
This stuff is tuff.
As for peeling off the plasti dip i cant say how hard it is or the pressure it takes, watching the videos it looks pretty simple once you get it going.
jmvotto you mean for Drew it has to be a New Mojo or Surf specific boat? I think Drew would love a new 13 Mojo but mainly for the subtle changes and the fact who doesnt like a new boat haha. I dont honestly see Drew changing brands right now, i think hes pretty happy with his Boat. He would have to really be getting a serious del to switch brands and i would only see him doing it strickly to help his daughters advance in the sport if they are really serious about going pro

I was at the boat show today and finally saw the chrome letters in person. if I had the letters on my boat I would immediately plasti dip them. especially after standing next to the sa350 and worlds with those letters blacked out.
I don't see any reason the material would come off if you didn't want it to come off but when/if you want it off it won't be an issue taking off. I think it would be the best $6.10 upgrade EVER. if anyone has some extra Moomba letters laying around ill take them off your hands and get them dipped up. full disclosure and documentation will follow

I would go with 4 to be safe. You can always take them back LOL.
I would go with at least 5 or 6 light coats. Maybe even 8 or 10. It all depends on how the finish looks.
I was watching videos and it shows how to fix blemishes, repair edges that peal up.
I too think if i had a boat with Chrome Letters they would be going black too. I keep looking at my truck to see what i could plastidip black or charcole grey. Nothing comes to mind LOL.
I like the chrome it has, side steps, bumpers, grill, and fender badges.
Mirrors whipers, handles are already black.
Dammit, i need something with chrome to plasti dip, im interested...
I can say if i still had Fierah i would be taking the windshield off and spraying the frame. I hated what ever coating was on it as it was peeling all the time. It looked nice new but the putting the cover on and off over the windshield put some scratches in it.

Best advise I can give Erik is clean the surface with windex and apply a very light first coat. Almost so light that it doesn't cover your decal very much. Let it dry 15-20 mins and apply second coat a tad bit thicker, so forth and so on till you get to your desired look, prolly 4-5 coats, each coat that you apply add it on a little thicker. Shake can real good and stay about 6 inches away while spraying. First time I did it and messed up I got to close and sprayed to heavy thus getting a drip like look. 6 inches and light coats. NO WORRIES thou cause if you mess it up it comes off real easy. Give me a call if you need any verbal help!

Yeah that DID NOT happen today. I underestimated the tediousness of taping the letters off. I was an hour into taping and only had about half of the first side done. Patience is not one of the things I was blessed with and I think it would be best to spray these before they are stuck on the boat. Wish I had thought of this last summer when I got the letters replaced.

you don't tape around around the letters thou. just tape a box around the letters and spray the whole thing. them with a tooth pick you peel around/between the letters. when you peel the plasti away it will peel off the letters then you tooth pick in between letters. let me try and find the video, may make more sense that way

Man, I want to do it, but I dropped some $80 on the chrome reg numbers and I'm worried the DNR won't go for those being blacked out on the black part of the hull. Do you guys that have used it think it will work on the "MOOMBA" decals on the transom and the "MOJO" on the rear sides, too? It's more of a domed sticker material than the side chrome ones.

with your reg numbers up front you can spray them black then use a plastic razor blade and trim about an inch around so that way you have part chrome part black to add a little "pop" to the reg numbers.( like boone's Chevy emblem) or you can black out and it water cops tell ya it's a no go just remove the plasti

Im seriously considering doing th lowered section in the center of my trucks hood and make a couple black strips down the sides to match the strips on the new boat.
Kinda like when you see them big 5th wheel RVs and the carry the stripes right over to the truck. Shaweet.

Cool design , won't that slow down the board?

I am not sure if it will hold up to the water or slow it down? There is not much texture to it. It just feels like flat paint.
We will see....

Got bored today and dipped the hitch and lock. Also dipped the receiver so now it's all nice and black. The ball will not hold once I start hooking up the boat but that's fine, it's a black ball so prolly won't be to noticeable. Once it gets looking to bad ill just peel it off. Gonna put about 100 coats on the hitch stem where it inserts to receiver and hopefully that will quite down some of the metal on metal clanking all the time

I wrap the hitch with duct tape so it doesn't rattle or vibrate. You know, duct tape has many good uses.
I can think of at least one right now:
