View Full Version : Training with the Pooches?

I have been biking and jogging with my dogs for our mutual benefit. My question is, as I am training for the 10K and then eventually the marathon, when should I leave them at home? What do you think their limit is? I know that when I am running (and I use that term loosely since I am slooow) I have not been too worried about them. But I have not run over 3.5 miles yet.

Today we went biking at lunch and Courage let me know that it was over. I was biking, so they were really running, not the walk-trot that they do when I am running. At about 3 miles Courage just lay down. That is it we are taking a break! After a short break he was OK and we continued. But I went down to gear 1-1 for the rest of the way home.

Does anyone else have experience with training with their dogs?

Probably just too darn hot at that hour for them to run at the faster pace. Stacy will bike with Dakota (Sandy's nearly 12 and can't do it). I've never taken Dakota for a run, only walks. I think that's really cool that you can run with both of your dogs.

You are right, MrsDaze. It was pretty hot. I guess they will let me know when it is too much. I think when I bike I will just go two miles and drop them back home before I continue. I know they can run faster and farther then I can!

They are both still pretty young. The big white German Shepherd is 2 and the small cocka-poo is 4. It is really great to run with them.

When I was reading about Sandy not being able to run, it reminded me of Max. He was our white cocka-poo that lived to be 19! When Zachary was a baby I started running for the first time ever. I would push him in the stroller and I would jog through the woods when we lived in GA. Max would run with me but after about a mile he was done and would get into the stroller with Zachary! LOL! It is making me laugh now to think of him. He was the best dog!

That is precious!! I love to hear that he made it to 19. Stacy thinks I should try running with Dakota. It would be good for Dakota too.

Yeah! Try it. I use a belt and put it around hip height and just tie the leashes at the length I want to the belt. I dont use my hands to hold the leash when I run with them. Running with them is the best. You would both like it!

That's what I need a dog to drag me around when I get tired. That would keep me going! I wonder if any of my neighbors would let me borrow their dog?

Hi Mrs. Kane! Sounds like a good idea. I never thought about tying Dakota to my belt. That would be so much easier!

Ok ladies, the only thing I can say is beware. The dog will get used to all this running outside and I'm not sure how cold your winters are, but when winter comes and it gets cold, the pooch is still going to want to go. I actually had to train our Springer Spaniel "Lightning" to run on the tread mill. Then I had to add weights because it still wasn't enough. He ran so hard one time he literally crapped while on the tread mill and nuggets went flying off the back. He never flinched. I of course stopped the tread milll to clean up the crap and let him out. Put a towel down from then on, but just so you know. You're dogs will get used to this and will not want to slow down no matter how cold it gets.

That is HILARIOUS! Watch out for those puppy nuggets!

I have temporarily lost one of my running partners. The two dogs were out of the back yard when I got home from work Wednesday. My big white German Shepherd got caught in something (maybe?) and he punctured and sliced open his front leg and foot in three places. I picked him up from the vets yesterday with 25 stitches. He is so pitiful and can barely walk. He will get up and limp into the kitchen if the noises/smells are interesting enough. But they have to be good ones. Usually a little refrigerator squeek and there they both are!

Very funny Littlena! I'm glad I wasn't drinking when I read this or it'd be all over the computer. Boy, that would be great if we could train Dakota to go on the treadmill (make sure he does his business first):)

I hope Juneau is doing a little better today.

Sorry to hear about the hound. Hopefully he will heal fast.

Thank you for the concern for that big boy. I think he feels a little better today. Our neighbor gave us a basketball goal since their kids are gone. While Zachary was trying it out Juneau got pretty excited and was limping around really fast and looking happy :)

Just before I moved to the States (to marry my lovely bride LittleNA), in fact that same day, I took my faithful hound Harley (1/2 lab, 1/2 German Shepard) hunting with me. It was the opening of Grouse season. He ran easy 10 miles that day along side me on my ATV. It was a very warm September. He was also known to wander for hours at night if I didn't watch him close. Now he was a big dog, but the point is they can go a long ways if they want to.

MrsZ, how's Juneau doing? Does he get upset when you go running without him?

He is better ...metally. But physically he is still not so great. I have taken Courage running twice without Juneau. The first time he could not care any less. But today I heard him crying a LONG way down the road. :(

Oh I hate that! I really enjoyed taking Dakota yesterday. He was much easier to run with than I expected. He was pooped last night:) Yesterday was supposed to be stretch & strength but I've kind of switched the days up this whole week up. Next week I'll get back to the regular schedule.

Post a pic of dakota after....and both of you during. :)
