You are going to need battery covers if you ever get stopped by the coast guard. They were doing inspections last weekend at canyon lake as we were launching.

I've seen lots of pics with batteries just sitting out there in the open in storage compartments. Always seemed strange to me - even the gel cell ones that can sit at any angle. Aside from getting nailed on a safety inspection or the neat/clean appearance factor just the thought of exposed terminals makes me a little nervous. My luck somebody with metal trim on a bag, purse, life jacket, (empty beer can?) whatever would throw it in the storage on top of the batteries and POW!

Well, I didn't know it was required. Where I put my second battery, there's no room for a cover. I got inspected over the weekend and they never looked. It wasn't on their list of items to check.

Funny - I've had my Moomba for exactly 5 years and 4 days and in that time the only check/inspection I've gotten was my maiden voyage. No registration, tags from out of state, no proof of ownership, nothing! Had all the safety gear though and the guys were pretty cool about it. They were actually city cops out in a little Bayliner on this small lake - kind of bizarre. Probably a boat they seized in a bust or something and that was their excuse to go joyriding.
