If you do a little research on Wikipedia, Canadian and American Football started in North America in the 1860's, originating from rugby. As early as 1861 in Canada and the US. One of the first games recorded was McGill University challenged Harvard University, in 1874. The only difference to date is the CFL plays 3 downs to the NFL's 4 downs.
